Long Legged | Huge Hairy

Sitting alone in crepuscular silence, a little after midnight, I was typing on my Mac when suddenly a huge, hairy, stripy-legged spider rappelled straight down from the ceiling, landing smack in the middle of the keyboard!

Wow... what a surprise!

Immediately it started racing around, across the screen, over the back and then across the screen again, round and around, sometimes over the keyboard and others over the display. I watched its antics, knowing that these spiders, like Ridgebacks, have their crazy run-amock moments and that it is best to leave them to it.

Eventually, it stopped somewhere out of direct eyesight from where I sat. Getting up and walking around the desk slowly, I saw it had come to rest on the back of the MacBook Air.

That was not where it remained though; the games had already began...

Solstice Prayer Mate | My Little Mantis

I spotted this delicate little visitor in the kitchen and watched it make its way along the floor at quite a speed before swooping down to pick it up. It is only about 3cm long, in another photo you can see how large Marduk's hair is by comparison.

S/he was very interactive and curious, tapping on the olloclip lens with a raptorial foreleg as I moved in close to get into focus and jumping up onto my hand at another point. I watched for a while, seeing it carefully clean its face with comically curious little motions; if I'd been able to maintain focus with the olloclip I'd have videod it. It travelled the length of my arm and made its way onto my back, which it explored fully, giving me feedback of its location with little tickles!

Feeling grateful for the Mantis' message on this day, I set him/her among the plants outside by my bedroom and thanked it for this and for coming in to play.

A bird in the hand... | ...is worth taking the time

I was walking up the steps towards Main Street, having parked the car by Ragged Staff gates yesterday morning, when I saw a little birdie perched on the top one. It looked at me as I stopped and stared back into its bright black eyes. We regarded each other for several moments until I remembered I needed to be somewhere and moved. The fledgling fluttered and jumped around a few times, ending up under a bench.

I approached and wavered, not happy to leave it there but not sure of the alternative; I was late.

Seeing some gardeners working in the adjacent flower beds I approached and asked them to keep an eye on the little one. The younger chap stared back at me with wide eyes, no doubt wondering what I was on; finally he asked me where it was. I doubled back and showed him where the bird was hiding and the young man dived in to grab it. It was too young to fly but led the chap a merry chase as it fluttered just beyond his reach every time he swooped in to catch it. Down the stairs they danced, the man jumped and crouched, jumped and crouched as the bird fluttered a feather's breadth ahead of him. Finally, he managed to catch the fledgling, holding it gently in his strong hand.

"Ah, he has a new papi!" I laughed.

"Leave him in the flower bed over there," the older gardener said as we returned, "The mother will find it and come to feed it." There were low-growing bushes and plants there and it seemed a much better place for the fledgling shelter. I hope he was right; there was no sign of it as I walked past again a few hours later.

Spider on T-bag | Green Light

Clearing up in the kitchen this afternoon, I pulled up some tea-bags that had been draining in the sink... and spotted a slightly sodden spider clinging to one of them. I've no idea why I was slowly pulling the tea bags up by their labels like that, over the edge of the sink, as it is not something I usually do, but it was cool to see them emerge slowly over the side with the spider hanging on grimly.

I noted with delight the green body of the spider and smiled at the connections that came to mind, allowing it to crawl onto my hand as the dots glowed and I joined them. I noted this atypical behaviour, as in the past I've limited myself to handling the very little spiders. I've observed that spiders can move awfully fast when the mood strikes them; I've seen them suddenly run around like Ridgebacks during their hyperactive moment, dashing dizzyingly about for no apparent reason.

So, I let it crawl slowly over my hand as I took it outside, observing its beauty...

Photo

...the translucence of its long limbs, decorated with dots; its body in that beautiful shade of green, those beadlike pairs of eyes, the long shadows it so elegantly cast...

Feeling the urge to go for my iPhone and take a photo of it, I started to move with that intention but then remembered the phone was charging in my bedroom, right on the other side of the house and I thought it was a bit much to expect the spider to stay during transit, so I retraced my steps and walked towards some bushes instead. I considered placing it there while I retrieved my iPhone but knew the spider would disappear into the foliage, camouflaged by the greens. Again I started towards the house and again I turned back, stopping once more to observe the spider. Finally, I decided to act on my impulse: sharing with it my intention, we went indoors to fetch my iPhone. It was fully charged, I noted, and my green friend remained in place on my hand as we traversed the house.

Emerging into the sunlight again I stopped and looked at it 'through the glossy screen' this time as it wandered slowly across my hand, pausing ever-so-often and remaining still as I worked the camera and focused on it.

After taking several shots I set it in the bare branches of a creeper and smiled my thanks at it for playing with me. As I looked at it, I wondered: would it stay there long enough for me to take my big camera out, change lenses and return for some real macro shots? I thought then, was I asking for too much now?
This is something people sometimes chastise me for...

I smiled again at the spider. This is the thing with animals, they don't limit you with their thought forms... one of the many reasons I enjoy playing with them.

S is for Snake | Slaughtered by Sekhmet

As I stepped outside yesterday evening a curious shape caught me eye.

Venturing closer, I saw the snake had a puncture would in its throat (just visible here) and that its vertebrae was damaged in two places. I can only surmise that Sekhmet is responsible for this, as she is for leaving a variety of small cadavers I find dotted outside the house.

On the morning of the 25th December I'd found a really cute little snake in exactly the same place I found this one, which appeared to be dead or very close to it. I brought it inside in the hope that the warmth would revive it, but no such luck.

Does anyone have any idea what type of snake this is?

Sunrise over the sea | 1st Jan 2012

Driving home this morning I'm glad I took the right road back

to see the sun as it rose from the lightening horizon

and as I spotted the tip of the fiery orb emerge

I pulled into one of the very few lay-bys...
